Welcome to Year 1

Our class teacher is Miss Beger and our teaching assistant is Miss Morris.

This half term we will be learning all about 'Building Bridges'. Year 1 will be finding out about different bridges in Widnes including the Mersey Gateway bridge and the Silver Jubilee bridge. We will be looking at how bridges are made and what materials they are made from, as well as locating the bridges using maps. In design and technology, children will have fun designing and making their own car, using wheels and axles to make their car move.

Phonics

In Year 1 there is a big emphasis on Phonics. We follow a programme called 'Read Write Inc' (RWI). The Read Write Inc programme is for primary school children learning to read. It enables every child to become a confident and fluent reader.

Below are some useful resources to support your child's learning in Phonics including Set 1 , Set 2 and Set 3 Phonic mats. These have all of the letter sounds that your child will be learning.

By the end of Year 1 children should be able to read all of the common exception words and most or all of the high frequency words. Below are lists of the key words. Please regularly practise reading and writing these words as this will really support and further develop your child's reading skills.
