This half term our topic is 'Unity in the Community'. Year 1 will be learning about the four countries in the United Kingdom and the capital cities. In art, children will be creating their own maps and sketching their route to school from their house.

Constituent Countries Of The United Kingdom - WorldAtlas

During this half term children will enjoy reading the story 'The Bog Baby' by Jeanne Willis.

Home-made Play Dough Bog Baby Kit - Rhubarb and Wren

Phonics

In Year 1 there is a big emphasis on Phonics. We follow a programme called 'Read Write Inc' (RWI). The Read Write Inc programme is for primary school children learning to read. It enables every child to become a confident and fluent reader.

Below are some useful resources to support your child's learning in Phonics including Set 1 , Set 2 and Set 3 Phonic mats. These have all of the letter sounds that your child will be learning.

By the end of Year 1 children should be able to read all of the common exception words and most or all of the high frequency words. Below are lists of the key words. Please regularly practise reading and writing these words as this will really support and further develop your child's reading skills.
